Rushcutters Bay Residence is a study in restraint, materiality and the relationship between furniture, art and space. The apartment was approached with the intention of creating an interior that felt refined and considered without losing the ease and character of a lived-in home.
Working within a compact footprint, the design focused on establishing a sense of openness while giving each area its own identity. Furniture was selected not simply to fill the space, but for its proportion, silhouette and relationship to the pieces surrounding it. Sculptural forms sit alongside quieter elements, creating moments of contrast without overwhelming the architecture.
A restrained palette of warm timber, soft neutrals, natural textures and darker accents runs throughout the apartment. Rather than relying on colour alone, variation comes through material and finish — leather, timber, wool, glass and metal introducing depth while maintaining a sense of visual calm.
Artwork and lighting form an important part of the composition. Each piece was considered in relation to scale, sightlines and natural light, allowing the interior to shift subtly throughout the day.
The result is an apartment that feels collected rather than overly styled: a balance of softness and structure, vintage influence and contemporary form, with each element given enough space to hold its own.
